Welcome to Cinema Studies at Stockholm University!

Founded in 1970, the Department of Cinema Studies is one of the oldest and largest ones in Europe. We have particular research strengths in the areas of film history, especially early and silent cinema, media technologies and screen cultures in transformation, gender studies and national cinemas, in particular Swedish and Nordic cinemas. We are acknowledged as one of the leading research areas in the field of humanities at Stockholm University. The department offers courses on all levels from basic level to PhD, including a taught Master’s Programme with students from around the world. We are the only cinema studies programme in Sweden to have 35mm projection facilities for teaching on all levels.

International Master’s Programme Studies starting in August 2010

The international master’s programme is a two-year programme which offers advanced studies in the theory, history and aesthetics of cinema and the moving image. It is taught by senior faculty members of the Department of Cinema Studies, as well as renowned visiting professors, who all conduct cutting-edge research in the histories, aesthetics, and cultures of cinema and the moving image. The programme welcomes students from all over the world. Students should be motivated to further develop a critical mindset, while at the same time further their knowledge in the field. The program encourages active participation in current academic discussions through lectures, seminars and writing exercises. Students will become confident working both independently and in groups.
